| Hi, My wife and I intend moving to the Island in the near future. We have both visited the Island several times and were both born and grew up in Hampshire but have been away from the area for a long time. Could anyone suggest the best areas to settle, we are in our late 50s but very active and enjoy the outdoor life including walking our dogs. Many thanks. |

Hi tristar1
I think the best area to settle in is the west wight area in my opinion.

My husband and I are virtually on the brink of moving to IOW with our two young boys. We are presently selling our property in Franc and believe that after all our research and speaking to people who know the island well, that this is the place for us. Our main objective will be to find jobs, it doesnt matter in which field, we both are willing to turn our hands to pretty much anything in order to fulfull our dreams. The french rural life was good for us at first, but after 6 yrs I wanted to make the move back to an english speaking community, but, couldnt face the thought of going back to manchester after the children had flourished in the rural surroundings. We would therefore like to find out the best area to rent that is central for jobs and good schools, possibly a C of E Primary school, until such time as we have sold our property in France and can look to buy. We also would prefer to take a private let, rather than from an agency. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The whole Island are willing to turn their hand to anything, but unfortunately if the jobs aren't there you can't.
Even here on the Island, qualifications are more important than experience, which was only the norm for the Mainland a few years ago, but now there are few true Island firms left employing.
Part time and seasonal are the two words that sum up the employment situation here, worsened still by most employers not paying much over the National Minimum Wage. This has lead to an increase in people being reliant on benefits to supplement their earnings just to keep a roof over their heads.
The cost of living seems higher here, but in reality it is no different to anywhere else in the UK and is relevant to what you earn. |
