Hi, We will be moving to the island next summer. We consist of a couple with children aged between 5-11 plus the family pets! Have started to research where to live but we are still confused. We are from a small welsh town so we would like to keep a sense of community thats not too busy (already use to tourist invasion in the summer) but still can keep the children occupied.
Any suggestions?

You could try the really touristy places like Ryde and Sandown and surrounding areas. I believe these are quite "lively" areas but I am sure there will be other people on the forum who will be able to help you better than I can. I live in a very sleepy "hamlet" near Yarmouth, which is very nice but not much going for young children although having said that there are quite a number of children who live round this area.

I live in Ryde and it certainly can be lively - perhaps even a little rough at times, although not by mainland standards. You might have a look at some of the outlying districts like Binstead, Brading or Seaview. I quite like Lake too, a lot of nice people seem to live there.

I would echo what Robert said. I live in Ryde as well. It's the largest town on the Island and during the peak season very lively. But if your after some sense of community as well Roberts suggestions may be ideal. You'll still be very close to the the 'bright lights' if I can call it that. Ryde is also one of the main departure points for getting to the mainland having both the Seacat to Portsmouth, the Hovercraft to Southsea and the beggining of the train line (which uses ex-London Underground carriages!) and runs from Ryde to Shanklin.
