Is this the thin end of the wedge?
Without doubt the longest stretch of beach, except maybe for Yaverland to Sandown, where dog walkers and others take their winter exercise now seems to be a council fund raiser for 12 months of the year.
Its outrageous and will probably herald the imposition of similar charges at all the other seaside towns within a year or two.
BTW Tali, you might rephrase the poll question regarding parking "on" the lake.
Mind you, I can think of a few people that I wouldn't mind if they parked "on" the lake

As quite a lot of island businesses are tourism based and therefore have many employees who are seasonal or part time, I suggest that the Council use the same criteria for traffic wardens and lay 1 in four off from 1 November until Easter. The money saved would equate to more than that raised by this new ruse.
But, of course, Council employees like civil servants are immune from the economics that affect those who pay their wages.

It's time the Council got lobbying a bit harder to central government for more funds, not penalise us!

We live on an Island and pay the same amount of road tax as everyone else, but the money collected is given to the central pot.

We basically fund the repairing of roads we rarely, and in some cases never use, the Council are given a pittence as a budget and so has to charge for parking.

In 2001 there were 168,000 motors on the Island that's a lot of road tax that we don't benefit from.

What does he do that justifies that sort of salary?

To keep a motor on the road, you pay anywhere upto £200 pa road tax. Paying to park on a piece of land owned by the Council is I guess fair enough, but to have to pay to park in the streets that your road tax is supposed to cover is an out right liberty take, and we've let local authorities do it for years.

Let me park in the street for free, but limit the time I can park there and if I go over the time and get caught I'll cough up the fine.

@WP,
Thats peanuts by todays standards.
We got him on the cheap because he'd never been that high up the ladder.
The previous incum, incum.. incumbent was getting £200K and left us for greener pastures in erm, Newham, an inner city London Borough for another £50K per year.
So parking charges on Ryde seafront all year round will no doubt be used for the benefit of the good burghers of that town and distressed gentlefolk in the surrounding area.....
Fat chance!
How did we get back to FAT again? Laughing

i agree i think we shud have to pay, for parking on the esplande, mainly caus those who work on the mainland AND LEAVE THERE CAR ON THE ISLAND.!
plus its hardly expensive compared to the rest of the u.k.
People shud thank themselves lucky that its cheap to park here what with the permits, and friendly traffic wardens..
I mean i have been let off so many times here of a parking ticket its unreal, i would never get away with it in london or any where else.....

plus the other thing is i am totally for traffic wardens caus there is some right idiots out there on the roads, and if everyone obeyd the law then we wouldnt have them, we can thank other peoples behaviour that we have them around. people who slag them off are nothing but low lifes and proberly havent got a job themself.
At least their not on the dole like the rest of the island....

Well tiger where do I start?

You are totally for traffic wardens as everybody should obey the law, that is everybody except you by the sound of it as they have let you off so many times its unreal.

Also you appear to be of the opinion that anyone who commutes to the mainland should obviously be taking their cars with them. So how did you arrive at that little gem of logic?
As for the spelling!

Nobody wants a forum where topics are dominated by people trading childish insults.

As we've seen in the past, it's very easy for a useful topic to descend into a slanging match. In order to stop that from happening here we have removed two sets of comments that were nothing more than insults aimed at the opposing user.

If you have any questions regarding the moderating practices please use the "Contact Us" link on the menu to get in touch.

First you totally neglect this forum and let people do as they please, then you get all heavy handed and go to the opposite extreme.

You're inconsistent and therefore unpredictable. You demonstrate no balance in your moderation, therefore posting comments is a lottery based upon your daily whims and consequently a pointless exercise.

I reassert the premiss that it is hardly surprising that no one uses this forum

As stated previously, allowing topics to descend into tit-for-tat name calling benefits nobody and will no longer be "neglected".
