Local councils are being urged to provide improved public access to better toilets – including Changing Places toilets – across the country.

Strategic guidance recently published by the Department for Communities and Local Government ‘Improving Public Access to Better Quality Toilets’, states that having Changing Places toilets in key public places would make a dramatic difference to the lives of thousands of people.

Communities Minister Baroness Andrews said:

"Some people may find the whole idea of a strategic guide on public toilets funny. But let's remember that there are serious issues too, issues that make public access to toilets a matter of vital importance to many people.

"For older people, disabled people, and families with young children poor access to public toilets can make it difficult to leave home, and reduce their freedoms and sense of dignity.

"There are excellent examples out there of innovative councils finding ways to increase access to quality toilets without imposing an additional burden on council tax payers. If others follow their lead and take up this challenge, we would all be better off."

We, Isle of Wight disability campaigning group 'Diversi-TIES' and Keep Britain Tidy - The issue of introducing the provision of Changing Places Toilets throughout the UK into the Blue Flag Award criteria was put to Keep Britain Tidy earlier this year. Keep Britain Tidy operate the Blue Flag scheme in England on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Following their Advisory Panel meeting in March, Richard McIlwain from Keep Britain Tidy informed us that
Quote:
whilst members felt it was an excellent initiative - there was some concern about how viable it would be to make it a criteria for award. It was felt that facilities such as these might normally be considered as part of capital redevelopments of sea front areas. The award might help in raising the focus of the changing places toilets - particularly in cases of redevelopment - whilst not actually being a formal condition of award.

We feel that this is a positive move forward both locally and nationally and we will be seeking to raise the focus of changing places toilets through other national award schemes, such as the scheme run by the Association of Town Centre Management.

Should anyone like more info on the local or national campaigns for the provision of Changing Places, I, Alan Davies, founder member of Diversi-TIES, can be contacted in writing c/o The Isle of Wight Branch of Carers UK, Riverside Centre, The Quay, Newport, Isle of Wight or by email on alwidav@sky.com.
