Hi everyone I have found this site while researching the island for relocation.
Im currently completing a BA(hons) Tourism Management and after hope to do a MA in Human Resource Management - finished in 2012!!! so will be looking to move then.
I have 2 boys and im hoping to move and im researching different locations both in uk and abroa, I am looking for a area which is rural but has activities for them, for myself the things to do bit is not essential, just a happy family life.
Some posts say that the job situation is quite difficult there - is that still an issue ? Would having a tourism degree etc help get a job or not as it having alot of tourism to the island? or would it be a case of commuting to the mainland everyday?
I would like a safe place to live and not the hussle and bussle of life - kids to be happy and closer to nature - am i looking in the right place?
sorry bit long winded!! xx Very Happy Very Happy

You'll probably find you're over qualified for the tourist industry the Island has. You will also struggle to earn the pay scale that comes with a qualification like that.
When the words tourist employment are put together you are normally talking of chefs, waiting staff, bar staff and all the other jobs that are only seasonal. Managerial stuff does come up from time to time, but some of these don't pay much more than the national minimum rate.

Most attractions here on the Island have been put together through entrepreneurship by the owners rather than getting degrees first. Unless times have changed, and someone on here will no doubt let you know,
the smaller concerns may well be intimidated by someone more qualified than them.
Commuting to and from for work, seems to work for some people, but you have to consider what distance is not going to affect your quality of life. Once off the Island you may end up with another 2 hours added to your day just in travelling to and from your place of work.

Stuff to do goes hand in hand with how much money you want to spend. For free there's plenty of exploring to be done either on foot or bike. Water sports are in abundance during the season. How big is your purse?

I don't know the crime figures for the Island, but I'd wager that for the amount of population we're top of the list in the UK for least amount of crime, which is fine and dandy as long as you can afford to live here.
