There's loads of of posts on this forum about this topic, I've replied to a few myself. If you've read through them all and still have doubts then the Island is not for you.
I don't really understand how someone can make a considerable change in their lives, which upping sticks and moving is, based on how favourable the responses are in a forum. In one of my previous posts on this subject I made the suggestion that it'll make sense to visit the Island both in the summer season and during the winter.
With the sun shining and the flowers blooming all looks good for the tourist, who the Island relies on, it's a different kettle of fish come the bleak winter months. If you still love the Island after experiencing it warts and all then you've made a wise choice.
This really applies to anywhere not just the Island. North Devon is not too different from here, they also rely heavily on their tourist trade.
You don't say what you do for a living. Here on the Island the majority of people survive on minimum wage and tax credits. Sustainable employment is the local authorities dream, but is a long way off being realised. |

So what does your husband see in North Devon that he doesn't see in the Island?
You can basically live anywhere on the Island and are within walking distance of country side walks for your dog. Houses aren't cheap here either and a house that doesn't have an obscured view is a real premium buy or rent property.
As for care homes, you'll do fine in that industry here. Apart from the usual touristy stuff care homes are in abundance. |

I agree with Wight Portal aboutworking in the care profession - there are always loads of jobs advertised in the County Press.
The house prices I think are quite average. Although I do think that the cost of living is dearer on the Island then elsewhere. But I suppose that's the price you have to pay for living in such a lovely place and enjoying a lovely environment. |

I currently live in North London. How Different is the Island?
I am in my 40's and will probably be renting for the first 6 months.
I am hoping for the sort of place where if I want to get to know people I can, but if not, I can just disappear into the background.
Would you recomend Ryde or Newport? |

The Island from East to West, Bembridge to the Needles is only 23 miles, from North to South, Cowes to St. Catherine's Point is 13 and 3 quarter miles,
with a population of, according to the last Census, 132,731.
The Island is the ideal place to disappear if you so wish.
If you're renting, Ryde has more choice than Newport, as most of the big Victorian properties have been turned into flats and bedsits.
From your post, I'm guessing you're single with few commitments and have some cash, so you may as well just go for it and if it ain't what you're after, well, no harm done and you would of had a holiday. |

I posted on a similar thread a few weeks ago, and I'm still on the verge of making the move. I've been watching prices, opinions, ideas, everything or the last couple of years and I've still seen nothing to put me off.
The question of house prices depends on where you live at the moment. I'm in Nottingham, and when I first started looking at IoW I expected prices to be expensive - maybe getting towards London/SE levels, but they aren't. They are very similar to Nottingham prices in terms of what you get for your money, but with the added advantage of being in a more civilised area and near the sea/beach - something which is difficult to find in Nottingham.
The other thing I look at is the website of the IoW local paper- IoW County Press - to get an idea of what goes on. That is an absolute revelation when it comes to what is regarded as important. Looking at the Nottm equivalent on an average day there might be a stabbing, a drug raid, physical assault, arson at a school, and an aggravated burglary. In IoW there will be a minor collision between two cars, and a lady fell over and twisted her ankle on the promenade.
That says it all. |

The on-line County Press never seems to mention the "small fry" assaults or burglaries - if its a biggee - like the raid on Cowes jewellers then that might get a mention (have to add that that particular raid like so many was not carried out by Islanders!) but the courts are quite busy every day with cases of GBH/ABH, drug raids etc. The majority of the assault cases though are mainly carried out at the weekends when the youngsters are out causing trouble after they've have had a few "bevvies".
A lot of the troubles, especially during the holiday season, is of course caused by holidaymakers! During the summer there are a number of court cases for domestic violence, robberies, rape, drugs, drink driving - but very often these are caused by people who do not live here.
I think that the Island police do quite an effective job as they always seem to catch the perpetrators of any criminal act and take action accordingly.
But you are quite right, I also feel that taking everything into account the Island is a much safer place to live then anywhere on the mainland. |

They do a very good job with the resources they have. We have a village sized police force to cover the whole Island.
The summer weekends of the '80's, were a nightmare for them. Back then there were more nightclubs. In the Sandown/Shanklin area you had:
Zanies
Colonel Bogeys
The Court Jester
Cobwebs
The Keats Inn
The Holliers
These alone used to have their fair share of trouble, but there was also Barney's Roadhouse out on the Military Road. Boy racers bevied up and driving like idiots.
All these establishments kicked out at the same time.
The beach opposite both Zanies and the Jester were often battle grounds, anywhere up to 30 or 40 youths re-enacting Brighton Rock. The other side of the Island a drunken Grand Prix is happening, meanwhile Mrs. Jones from Newport Road Cowes is being burgled, there's a serious domestic going on at a holiday camp in Bembridge and another fight has broken out in Newport High Street.
How do you Police something like that with such small amount of resources?
They get a rough deal, victims of crime only see what's going on with them at that moment, so if the response time isn't instant then the Police must be sitting around drinking tea and can't be bothered.
The bigger picture is we have a great Police force and is why our crime levels are so low. |

I moved here from Nottingham a year ago. I knew the Island quite well. However living here is something completely different!
The biggest priority is to be able to drive - you will need to before you apply for jobs from care work to seasonal to office as the bus service is extremely expensive (£2.50 minimum single fare no return tickets and £20 for 7day ticket) and doesn't run everywhere or frequently except to Newport - there is only one bus company too. Alot/most of jobs are part time and minimum wage with some jobs getting over 100 applicants. Many people commute to the mainland to work via hovercraft or Cat which is also expensive.
The pace of every section of life is slow and alot of pensioners here.
The rentals are pretty reasonable and alot of good quality ones. The shops arent great but then you can go to the mainland.
Personally I miss the City , the trams, buses and airport the general lively buzz, theatres cinemas etc and contrary to the above poster thought Notts was a good clean city with alot of students - yes some bad areas but not the stabbings and crime that were mentioned in all the areas!
The Island IS stunning and scenic some beaches amazing..and great for children when young but not teenagers really.... I will not be stopping once summer has gone. Holidays only from now on. |

Now that's something new.
Most people who move here and then leave do so because of financial reasons, I don't think I've ever heard of any that are homesick for the city life they left behind. |
