Too many IOW employers fail to contact jobseekers after they have attended an interview
The initial application, cost of travel and then interview time - put in by jobseekers - only to be left hanging and only guessing outcome is disgusting
How hard is it to let 4-6 people know via email, phone or letter?
THEY SHOULD BE NAMED N SHAMED |

I have to agree with you Lillyme.
Most job seekers nowadays have email and as anyone knows, it's not difficult to set up a standard rejection template and send it out.
I'm not fussed about a personal salutation, so they won't even have to change the template, just to know where I stand is all I ask. |

I had an interview with the charity Age Concern over 5 months ago. I didn't get it and I was only one of two candidates. I also currently work as a volunteer for them and to date I have still not been told I didn't get it! I also put a cv and covering letter through the door of a shop I live above where a new business has taken over. Three weeks on, not even a note through the door.
In fact out of all the countless applications I have made over the last 8/9 months ONLY 2 have had the courtesy to let me know the result of applications/interviews, namely the Islands NHS and Wightlink. |

yes I heard back from NHS and Wightlink too, but apart from one other thats all out of countless
have an interview this afternoon but although I want it I am already thinking 'whats the point'!
but all you can keep doing is trying isn't it?
maybe one day the tide will turn and the businesses won't have the supply of applicants they have today and will have to learn some manners |

Good luck Lilyme with the interview.
I symathise entirely with your sentiments though - it does grind you down after a while I know but we have to just keep plugging away. I got to the stage long ago of applying for jobs I wouldn't normally touch with a barge-pole! but my attitude now is if i'm capable of doing the job i'll go for it. The trouble is when you for un-skillled jobs your up against countless other applicants chasing just one post. Oh-hum! |

If I remember rightly you're the right side of 30 not to be looking for a job and go to college. You'll get paid just the same as you do now and at the end of it you'll have a nice bit of paper, that the whole world has gone crazy on, saying you can do, whatever course interests you.
It sounds as though through what you've posted, you wouldn't mind a crack in the retail trade. Then hop foot it to the college get yourself on a retail management course and then you've got more of a bargaining chip to put on your CV, especially if it's a part time course, you can get yourself a job as you study.
Failing that go and take the Construction Safety Certificate exam out Sandown. The exam ain't rocket science, it's only common sense and was only brought in because youngsters like you were getting killed through their stupidity. Once you've passed the dole will pay the £25 for your card and then you can go site labouring. There's no hard interview in the building game, if you're a warm body with a £3 hard hat, a pair of steel toe capped boots and a valid CSCS card you're in.

How To Get A Job 101
That last post goes for any industry that takes on unskilled labour.
Get yourself some sort of bit of paper that says you can do the job better than the next dope that sits in the interviewer's chair.
Cleaners, get a hygiene certificate.
Warehouse worker, get a manual handling certificate and so on and so forth. Even if it's a only a First Aid certificate it'll boost your chances of success.
If you're unemployed and drawing dole, there's what's called a discretionary fund available, I think the limit's £300 per claim. This is free cash people to get these all important bits of paper to help you get work.
The building game is beginning to pick up slowly and so more jobs will start appearing, especially as we head for the summer season. As Einstein says in his post competition is high for each job so get yourself ahead of the game.

Although the Council's forum is overly moderated, I last posted there on the 14th and it only appeared today, you do gleam some useful information from time to time. The following appeared yesterday:
A week long festival will encourage thousands of Island adults, whatever their background, to give learning a go.
Adult Learners' Week is the country's biggest and longest running campaign which is held every year in May. This year's event takes place between 15 - 21 May. It aims to celebrate learners in all their diversity while inspiring them to try something new. This could be for fun or the first steps to achieving a qualification.
This year's festival will see a huge variety of activities available to participants. They include cookery skills, visits to historic buildings such as Newport Roman Villa, taster sessions at Isle of Wight College and painting at Carisbrooke Castle.
Also taking place is a 'Learning for Work' open day at Isle of Wight College on Thursday 20 May. At the event, visitors can speak to local agencies who will help you get back into work or help you progress if you are already in work. There is also free advice and a wide range of courses available with some being free. Advice will also be given on if you may qualify for financial help.
A full list of events can be found at www.alw.org.uk and searching 'Isle of Wight' in the search box. |

That's interesting and I will check it out. Your other points are valid too, although, sad to say, i'm the WRONG side of thirty by 19 years!
Just applied for a role with the National Trust so fingers crossed. |

How To Get A Job 101
Sorry I got your age wrong.
So in which case it's never too late to learn something new. Voluntary work is all well and good, but to get money in your pocket you need to think laterally to give yourself the edge over others who are in the same boat.
The only way working in a charity shop will help you if they don't put you on the payroll, is by selling your stuff on a commission basis.
For instance if you were into making crafts, you could get them to take a commission on each sale, they're always looking for something better than old books, videos and clothes.

The simplest answer to this, if you really want to know, is to phone and ask. OK so that's not the point. But not knowing can mess up the momentum to move on to the next application, because you're constantly waiting.
When you phone ask for the person who interviewed you and ask why you never got the job. A rejection letter is really no good to you anyway, it doesn't tell you why, a phone call will.
Was the reason:
lack of qualifications
Lack of experience
What attributes did you not portray strong enough at the interview that the interviewer was looking for.
Knowing this you can then revise your interview technique or your CV accordingly.
Or you can:
Apply, go to the interview, move on to the next application, if they get in touch, great, if not stuff 'em!!
And never know where improvements can be made. |

How To Get A Job 101
In today's employment market, a good CV is important. If you knock one up yourself and you're unemployed and on Job Seekers Allowance, get one of the bods from the dole office to check it over.
They know or should know what employers are looking for so use them.
If you haven't some sort of Maths and English qualification, the dole have courses where you can gain GCSE equivalents through Adult Learning courses. These two are mandatory for a CV, if you can't show that you're numerate and literate to some extent, then there's plenty in the queue who are. On some of these same courses they also cover how to produce CV's and teach interview techniques and help with applications.
Depending on what sort of job you're applying for, you may find you need to have several CV's tailor made for each application you make, highlighting the attributes from your CV that are needed in the job description.
If anyone is interested I've stuck all these hints and tips and a few more in an ebook, which can be found on the site in my signature in the download section. |

Couldn't agree more. Not only the feeling of disappointment of clearly not getting the job, but also the knock to confidence cannot be ignored.
Thats one of the reasons why we added the features on our site www.isleofwightjobs.com that allows employers to simply click a button to send you an email, informing you if you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.
Simple and effective. |
