Hi All, I'll be Moving to the IOW in late May and will hopefully be staying for eight or nine months, possibly longer.

I'll be based in Shanklin and am wondering what internet services are available and which would be fastest to set up and best value for money. I only need a basic service for email and a little surfing, at this point I don't even have a mobile phone so one linked to a mobile service could be considered.

any help would be appreceaited

thanks

John

I guess you're going to be renting a house or flat. If it has a land line phone then go with that. It'll more than likely be a BT phone line but you can have your Internet supplied by Wight Cable, the Island phone company which costs from £17 or so a month for 3 gig bandwidth.

Or if you want to go with the mobile option 3 is probably the best, my brother lives in a caravan surrounded by trees and gets a good connection.

Hold the front page!

I see from your profile you're a chippy, so you're probably subbying over here right? In which case go with the mobile broadband because most subbies I've met have changed their accommodation arrangements at least once within the time they've worked here. You're likely to meet up with others who have found a better deal on digs than you.

Hi Wight Portal, Thanks for your reply, I'll be sharing a house with several strangers, so using an existing line probably wont be possible, it might be better to go down the route of WIFI or use a mobile service, I've never owned a mobile phone in the UK so I really don't have any knowledge of packages or account types with either system. I just tried to google "option 3" but couldn't figure it out, I've been living overseas for nearly 14 years so there's a lot of stuff I have to grips with again.

Go into your nearest Mobile phone shop and ask for a 3 mobile Internet account. Here's the web address with the details:

www.three.co.uk/

It'll be a 12 month contract, they'll give you a USB dongle that you just plug in to connect. Although I'm no expert as I avoid the use of phones land line or mobile, Three, reportedly have the best Island coverage.

When I first came down to the Island I got a mobile internet dongle with 3, but it wouldn't get any signal at all (that was in St. Helens). I cancelled that contract and went with Orange instead and never had any problems with that, connected fine everytime.

I live in Shanklin and currently use BT for broadband and phone which has worked quite well with no problems as the telephone exchange is in Shanklin.

Enjoy your time in Shanklin!

Also if you go to Shanklin library and register, the Internet access is now free, always handy for checking emails and having a quick browse, you get a 1 hour session, hope this helps.

Thanks all for the advice, I've been here a week, my new boss just gave me an Orange Dongle, this is the first time Ive tried to use it and it seems pretty slow, but works. so I'll use this for the moment and upgrade as required.

Thanks again

John
