I've answered dozens of these on this site and I try hard to write something different in each.
The care industry here is booming there's some good news for you to begin with.
Where as other employment comes and goes. There's quite a bit of building work going on at the moment, but unless your husband's a tradesman don't expect much more than the National Minimum wage. To see what's available, go to the Job Centre Plus site, although it's not anymore but still turns up in Google and leads to the right page, in the search box type All Jobs PO30 1PA and all Island jobs will be listed.
Accommodation for rent, there's plenty out there. Rent start at £600 a month for a 2 bed roomed house. Most are rented through agencies and most don't want people on benefits at all.
A lot of the property to rent are second homes by would be landlords, but have to mark up the rent higher than it needs to be because they are using an agency and trying to cover the mortgage which was fine until the bottom fell out of the boom.
So back to benefits, even the ones that advertise plainly that they will not consider anyone on benefits have come to realise maybe they will have to relent if indeed they are to make any money. So don't be put off by those ads that say no benefits. There's some desperate people out there.
There's loads of other posts on here on this subject, not all mine I hasten to add. Read them all. |

I know Langley Mill well.... if I was you I would stay in Derbyshire. Yes there is alot of care work, if you drive you may be able to get some 'home visiting' care work too - in general the wages are way below Derbyshire/Nottingham,usually minimum wage, mainly part-time or seasonal and the cost of living higher. Many unemployed so alot of competition for any jobs...Local shops are few as Tesco and Sainsburys are more popular and took the trade
The bus service is expensive with an adult single fare of £2.50 min even if your only going a couple of stops to save walking the hills. They don't do return tickets. The little train is cheaper but only operates a few stops not the whole Island
Rental property is ok, they dont like HB,pets or children much though.and.its more 'who you know' over here when looking if you want to avoid agents costs
It is a great place for kids in summer. But when they leave school there's not alot on offer over here
I would think long and hard before moving here - not saying it won't work but consider the many pitfalls and minuses first |

Hi Gail,
The island is a beautiful peaceful place to live and I personally love bringing my young children up here.
Yes the island has it pitfalls but so do many places! It depends on the lifestyle you aspire to. I have lived here all my life and have always managed to find work and places to rent without to many difficulties.
If you looking for work and training opportunities we run a local FREE employment board called www.isleofwightjobs.com which alerts you to new vacancies on the Isle of Wight as soon as their posted on the site.
Register for free and start seeing what opportunities exist.
I hope this helps and good luck with your move if you decide to go for it. |
