Hello all

I'm new here today.

I'm Marc and I live in Basingstoke. I've just returned from a few days in Sandown and already I am down at being back!

For many years I have been trying to find an opening to live and work on the island. It's either never been the right time/job, or not finding the right property.

But if I don't move now, I will never do it. Is there anyone here that has made the move successfully from the mainland, that I could talk to?

Thanks.

It seems there isn't a 'busy' Isle of Wight forum anymore. Which is a real shame.

Dont know if you guys knew this one http://www.wightforum.com/forum/

Seemed to be a great board but then posting just stopped? Anybody know if it started up again elsewhere?

We have just bought a business on the IoW (in Ryde) and are making the move in July....would be nice to find an active Iow or Ryde board?

Hope everyone is well,
Gus

Hi Marc

I moved here 4 years ago from up'North. For the first couple of years I used to commute across to Southampton which I found quite hard as I found that it restricted making friendships on the Island. Okay I made friends with my work colleagues, but because they lived on the mainland there wasn't any evening contact with them.

My other problem was that my partner very often works away from home so it means that I spend a lot of evenings on my own.

However, since leaving my job two years ago and getting a part-time job at a solicitors in Newport things have got so much better.

I started going to modern jive evenings at the Riverside Centre and made a really good friend and we now commute in the evenings to Southampton to a jive venue there.

Also, through my work, I have made new friends who I can meet up with in the evenings.

It took me a little while to get used to the pace of life on the Island but now 4 years on I quite like coming back to the Island when I have been visiting friends/relatives on the mainland and getting out of the "rat race". There always seems to be a lovely calmness as soon as I get on that ferry to come back.

My partner (who has now lived on the Island for 20 years having moved from Derbyshire) and I often talk about moving back somewhere up North but then when we get back home decide that we don't really want to be amongst all the hustle and bustle again.

The only downside as I see to the Island is the getting on and off especially if you do have to do a lot of commuting as we have to do. But there are more ups then downs.

Oh and of course another big downside is the jobs. It all depends really what type of work you are looking for. The reason my other half has to work away is that he is an IT Systems Tester and unfortunately there aren't many opportunities for him to do this work on the Island and to earn the money he can on the mainland contracting. So for the foreseeable future he has to work away from home and only get back at the weekends.

Good luck with your job/house hunting. I am sure that if you do decide to move here you won't regret it.

I have noticed that a lot of people when they come to the Island tend to become self-employed gardeners/odd job men. There seems to be lots of openings for this type of work!
