Hello. My name is Gemma and I am considering a move to the Isle of Wight (although just making tentative enquirys at the moment). If I did come over it would be for a job in Ventnor.
I would appreciate advice on the following
- Are there many rooms (rather than houses) available to rent? If so. where advertisments for these can be found? I have seen holiday lets but not any for private use
- Do residents on the Isle of Wight get any concessions for travl back to the mainland?
- Is Ventnor a nice place to live?
- What is the cost of living on the Ireland? do residents feel isolated at all?
I have never been to the Isle of Wight but will be going soon, in the meantime any advice would be appreciated ! Thank You |

There are places to rent - the local paper (County Press) have a property supplement each week showing places to rent and giving names of agencies that rent out property.
We get very small concessions for travelling to the mainland - for example to go across to Southampton on the red jet for an evening costs £12 return.
I have just paid £60 to travel from Yarmouth to Lymington (Wightlink), travellng Sat morning (9.00am) returning Tuesday (8.15 pm).
To go across by car on a day return (Wightlink) - same route - costs £47.
However the Wightlink prices do fluctuate considerably especially at the moment with the additional fuel tax they are adding to the charges.
I suppose it depends how often you are wanting to get off the Island. It costs me a fortune really as I go dancing to Mojive in Southampton at least once a week and sometimes twice and at £12 a time just to get across it soon adds up, especially adding on the extras like entrance fees/ drinks etc.
I personally cannot say what it is like living in Ventnor having never lived there, but I do know people who live in Ventnor and say they wouldn't live anywhere else on the Island - I suppose it depends what you are looking for really.
Personally, yes, I think you can feel slightly isolated on the Island. I know I did when I first moved here 4 years ago and yes, I personally feel getting on and off the Island can be real a pain especially when you need to buy something special and have to go to either Southampton or Portsmouth to get the item you require. But there again there's always the internet!!!
Island living is different to anywhere else. I moved here from a large city so it did take me a little while to get used to the place.
Is it expensive to live here - well I suppose in a way it is but its only really when you go to other areas that you realise just how expensive it is to live here - when you notice the price of thngs elsewhere - while you are here paying the prices you don't really think about it.
The other thing to remember is that the pay here isn't as high as on the mainland for the same job.
What type of job would you be looking for?
Hope this has helped and good luck with your move here. I am sure that once you were here and established you wouldn't regret it. |
