Good luck with your move the the Island. When are you coming across? Sorry can't really say anything about Sandown as I haven't lived there. I have only been here 4 years and lived at West Wight during that time but I do visit Sandown frequently and think its a great place.
If there is anything else you need to know ask and I will try and answer your questions. |

Hi
We are planning on moving to the Island but over the last couple of weeks, I have heard of two separate families who have moved back to the mainland because they could not get a job and they felt the people from the Island did not like mainlanders. Is there any substance in this - does anyone know? |

I have lived on the Island four years now having come from the Mainland (up t'North - we're you find very friendly people). When I moved here I worked on the mainland but was made redundant three years ago and had no difficulty in finding a part-time job as a secretary for a solicitor. I think it all depends on what type of work you are looking for really. My partner works away on the mainland during the week travelling home at the weekends. He is an IT system tester but there aren't any jobs of this nature to be had on the Island so he has no option to work away from home.
I have to say that I haven't had any problems with living here and finding friends but then on the other hand I have to admit that the "friendly" people do tend to be those that have moved to the Island from the mainland and not the ones actually born and bred here - they are the one's who seem to be a very unfriendly lot - in my experience anyway. But on the whole I haven't found the 'natives' too bad at all. |

| What type of work are you going to be looking for? For jobs you should get a copy of the County Press on Fridays as they list the vacancies and that would give you an idea of the sort of jobs on offer. |

And you made a thread on why doesn't anyone post
Way to go Lainey I can imagine locals whether born here or not are queuing up to register and have the same point of view!!
Perhaps the forum needs a new name? 'Overners of Wight'? |

Hi all
My family and i have just come back from a holiday on the island, and now we are thinking of moving there. I was just hoping that someone would be able to give me a rough idea as to how the schools work and how good they are as i have a 9 year old a 6 yr old and a 2 yr old, and at the moment the 2 eldest are in the same primary school. Would they have to be seperated??? Also, my husband has his own business in aerials and satellites, do you think there would be a calling for this line of work on the island??
Many thanks |

Oh dear Scooby we do appear to have hit a nerve somewhre don't we??
All I was stating was what I had found in my experience since moving to the Island that my friends just happen to be people who aren't born and bred here. And that I had found that some NOT ALL I must add of the people I have spoken to who I find out to be Island born and bred aren't particularly friendly!!
Also it was very convenient of you when quoting my words to miss out a very relevant sentence - "But on the whole I haven't found the 'natives' too bad at all". Now why was that I'm wondering?
I think there is a very good word for people like you "TROLL"!!!!
It seems extremely sad to me that there does appear to be this silly divide between us "overners" and the "Islanders" life is too short for pettiness of this nature and people like yourself don't help the situation.
I am certainly not the one who has given the Islanders this reputation or impression - this must have come from somewhere - maybe from people just like you Scooby, eh? |

well i grew up on the island and moved away for 12 years, moving back a little over a year ago so although i lived on the island all of my childhood, people consider me an overner as you put it, i find people down here very friendly, i have always had polite replies from anyone i have asked for help and found that a lot of people go out of their way to be kind and helpful, the Island is a wonderful place for kids, i have 5 myself ranging from 8 months to 7 years and they are the reason i moved back here, i had a very happy time growing up here and want the same for my children, i'm afraid i cant answer the question about jobs as i dont have the knowledge on such things but i am sure there are people on here who will help answer if they can.
