Looking at moving back from Brisbane Australia and living on the island with a great job offer in Portsmouth.
Any good schools around Ryde area, east wight or commutable distance to Ryde ferry terminal. I have only found 1 private school for the IOW on the web in Ryde, are there any more on the island?
Any info would be much appreciated particularly which schools and areas to avoid.
cheers

Hi Mark
Am moving to the island in July. We have been planning our move for about 3 years now and are finally in the position to do so.
When we have been looking at properties and reading the IWCP in my opinion it seems most hot spots are around Ryde! West Wight so far for us seems the best bet with the least trouble?
I wonder if the islanders could let me know if that is the case? We think we should avoid East Cowes, Ryde and maybe Sandown? When I say "avoid" - I live in South East London so Ryde would be a much better place than where I am now , but we want to make the right move for our kids.
If you do a search for "ofsted reports" you can get the most up to date school ofsted reports to check out the schools in the area you are looking at.
We can't wait to come over and live on the island!! |

Thanks for tips
I had already seen that the West seems the best from reading through the forum.
I would be interested to hear from anyone how long it would take from the west to Ryde in the mornings to catch the ferry/hovercraft across to pompey for work.
I know the distance is not great but from memory when we have visited getting through cowes can be busy at peak times.
Any info much appreciated

I live in West Wight and have to say that I think it is one of the better areas to live, although I do understand that Freshwater can have its "problems"!
Where I live is extremely rural (Shalfleet) but it is very handy to get to Yarmouth and the Yarmouth to Lymington ferry and also into Newport.
I work in Newport and set off around 20 to 9 in the morning and am usually in the office between 9.00 and five past. Going into Newport at this time doesn't seem too bad traffic wise. My main problem is if I just happen to get to the end of our road when a ferry has come into Yarmouth and I get stuck waiting for the traffic to pass - but that is really a very minor problem. I would definitely recommend West Wight (Yarmouth in particular, although very expensive).
When I first moved to the Island in 2004 I worked in Southampton and had to commute each day so had to drive into Cowes and I didn't find it that busy really and as I used to have to get an early ferry I very often managed to get parked up on one of the side streets for free! Things may have changed though as I am going back 3 years!
Good luck for your move Mark and hope that you find somewhere that you are happy withl
Also Isc73 hope you have a good move here and find a suitable area.
By the way I work for a firm of solicitors and I would agree that Ryde does seem to be a little "busier" where crime is concerned but there again I don't think that the crime on the Island is anywhere near as bad as on the mainland.

I work in Ryde and apart from work it's one of those places I just drive through. It doesn't appeal at all to me and I never even seriously looked at accommodation in Ryde. I've recently moved to Brading and it's nice and quiet where I am, suits me just fine.
As Lainey said, crime etc really isn't comparable to anything on the mainland and same goes for commuting times too. |
