Hi,
I recently posted an entry under 'living/moving to the IOW' in the sub-section 'wanted'
I wondered if anyone knows of any agencies who are reputable and don't charge huge up-front fees which can be almost as big as the deposit. The annoying thing is they aren't very forthcoming about what they actually do for this money. It is summarised as being 'admin fees' which from what I can see might involve one or two phone calls and maybe a letter.
My girlfriend and I are palnning to move to the island at the end of April or early may and will be coming to the island in late April, hopefully with at least 2/3 viewing appointments lined up. We would much rather rent privately but aren't having much luck so far and time is running out. Is there anyone who uses this forum who has rented recently? What was your experience like? Any advice gratefully received.
PS. The recenly posted photos of Culver Down have had an almost zen like effect on us! Beautiful! |

| I've just rented through Deacons in Ryde and have found them very good to deal with. |

Hi all, We too are moving to the Isle of Wight at the end of April with our three kids. Because we haven't lived in the UK for 5 years it is proving rather difficult as we have no bank account over there and can't get one till we have an address ( Swings and Roundabouts ). Without the refferances and credit check is hard and the letting agenies will only accept a deposit and 6 months up front ( can't do ) so we thought we would go down the private Rentals route Hhhhmmmm. Right ok need advice, We are now thinking of renting a caravan for a week or two in the hopes that we will be able to find somewhere either through the papers or shop windows. Without being there it is hard to tell if we are being realistic or not and we so do not want to be left in the lerch with kids in toll. The thing is we are selling everything this end to pay for our move the the IOW so there is no going back once we are committed. We also need fully furnished as we will only have essentials with us like tools of our trades and clothes paper work etc. So if anyone could look for us or give us a few honest home truthes it would be greatly appreciated you don't know how much.
Many Thanks |

I am not sure how relevant my reply is as your post is some 5 months old but all I would say is you will struggle without a bank account and some history of your finances. You will also need to find a job before you come to the island as there are zero jobs on the island and what is about is fairly poorly paid.
Your best bet is to get work in Portsmouth and commute that's what I did some 10 years back but rental properties here are not cheap.
A lot of people see the island as some kind of UK abroad but I am afraid that all the political bueracracy and red tape is the same here. Really check out the island first the schools are fairly average but like anywhere you have good and bad.
Good luck either way..

Am in the process of using More - there are admin fee's but I dont think you can escape them unless you rent privately which we tried to do, but ran out of time trying to find somewhere.
Haven't had any problems so far..... |
