I'll soon be moving to IoW to work in Newport, on my own... Very Happy

I have been on the island before but have no idea of how it is to live there permanently.

I'm looking for a place that's fairly busy (at least for IoW standards) and is close enough to commute to work. It's likely I'll need to go to London once a week. The obvious one is Newport, but how is it to live there? Any other suggestions?

Also, I don't currently have a car. I was thinking of moving first and then getting a car a few months in. Can you survive without one? Rolling Eyes

Newport is a pain in the ass for traffic. Seems busy every time i go there !!

With no car you will have to rely on the island bus system, which is very poorly run.........some villages only get 4 buses in & out of them per day, and the fares are ridiculous....

You should get yourself a car before you get here in my opinion.....

Also, you may want to consider Ryde as a place to live before you commit yourself to a town with "THREE" jails !!

If you don't have a car then I would have thought the best option would be find somewhere to live in either Cowes or Gurnard although both are quite expensive places to live.

Mind you the bus route to Cowes for the red jet from Newport is every 10 minutes so you shouldn't have much problem getting to and from Newport.

Good luck with the move wherever you decide to live - just steer clear of the rural areas otherwise you will be truly stuck especially without a car.

Also, I don't know if you are aware that the bus fares are astronomical on the Island. That's why there's so many cars and traffic jams!

Thanks guys,
It's been really hard to get any information about how it is to move to the island. It's almost as if you're not supposed to...

Well, if the plan doesn't change, then I'll make sure I buy a car before I arrive there.

I can't believe that according to what I've found and seen, life on the island will cost me more than now living in central London. Better quality of life, but if you're not a native and need to travel and rent, it ends up being more expensive.

Ah, well...

Yes, I agree it is very difficult getting information about living on the Island. And, yes, I would also agree that the born & bred Islanders would rather us Mainlanders would stay away!!

I can well believe that life on the Island will cost you more especially if you are commuting to London. But the quality of life here certainly makes up for the cost.

I think one of the main advantages here is that there is far less serious crime here - yes we do have the usual domestic violence, drunkenness, drugs, drug cultivation, shoplifting, fraud but all in all it is nothing compared with the crime you get on the mainland.

I am sure if you do decide to move here you won't regret it.

Everytime I go off the Island and come back to it, I always marvel at the beauty of it - it is truly striking.
