Hi everyone! This is the very first time ive done this so here goes! Confused
Ok, i am definatly looking to move to IOW from Cheshire, so in two weeks will be coming down for the weekend to start my search for where to settle on the island. Am drawn to the very southern tip of the island for various reasons, and will probably talk about details of this on the general site at a later stage.
We'll be coming down by car and would appreciate any recommendations on excellent hotels, BnB's or farmhouses that offer a high standard of service and accomodation or even somewhere just really 'different', and preferably over looking the sea. Looked on MANY websites and eventually lost the will to live so decided word of mouth FAR BETTER from those who know Wink !
Well, not sure if ive done this the right way but hey ho here goes!!!
Many thanks to one and all. B Very Happy

Welcome to the forum B. I have lived on the Island five years now and really love it here.

Which part of the Island are you wanting the BnB?

For something completely different I believe at Bembridge there is a house boat that does bed and breakfast. I have tried to find details of it on the web but haven't managed as yet. I will try and find out contact details or maybe someone else may have it?

Good luck in finding somewhere to stay.

Hi Lainey!! thanks so much for replying Very Happy , im shocked it worked as im totally useless with anything to do with the computer .
Im SOOOO excited about coming down in a couple of weeks, i feel as though after a few seriously awful years that im starting to plan life again, although its very very scary as its just me and my 13yr old daughter doing it on our own as we have no family at all, but funnily enough you replying has made me look forward to coming down even more, feels friendly and not so alien as stupid as that may sound Laughing
Anyway, IOW calls me as i grew up in Southampton but been trapped up here nearly 30years! I was thinking either Cowes or down by Sandown somewhere because they are the places i will go house hunting first, i dont know enough about the rest of the island to have an opinion yet.
Cowes because i LOVE anything to do with boats/ sailing (never done it myself but completely and utterly adore the whole thing and have a powerful urge to be around them!)
Sandown way because its at the southern tip of the island and the further south the better for me and maybe have better chance of buying a house with large garden for me to potter in with my animals around. Not sure Lainey, just have to see whats there and what i can afford.
So thats the idea but its not exactly a huge place so anywhere siutable really as long as its not in a 'Blackpool' style of setting!
Well as you can tell i could go on and on, hope to hear from you again Lainey and thanks once again for taking the time. B Very Happy

Hello B

I live in West Wight in a small hamlet called Shalfleet which is a ten minute drive from Yarmouth which has a ferry link to Lymington. And of course there are all the lovely boats in the harbour. Also we are about a 20 minute drive from Cowes.

I know you were asking about bed and breakfast venues - are you still looking or have you found somewhere? I know of a place in Cowes but it isn't by the sea although there are views of the Solent from the bedroom windows. I once went to have a look at it for some friends who were coming across - it was very clean and the rooms seemed really nice. Unfortunately can't remember name of it off hand but if you are interested and you would like me to get contact details for you I can do.

There are quite a few hotels in Sandown on the seafront but they always seem to be occupied by coach parties.

What date are you actually coming to the Island - are you just coming first for a look round or are you actually moving lock, stock and barrel in a couple of weeks?

If there is anything else I can do to help then please ask and I will see what I can do.

Regards Lainey x

ps: I'm originally from Yorkshire and not a born and bred Islander!

Hi B, I'm originally from Lancashire and spent the last 10 years living and working in Cheshire before moving down to the Island last year. Quite a daunting move as all my family are still up in Lancashire.
Can't help with the hotel or B&B suggestions I'm afraid, the place I stayed when I was down for interview was a bit of a dive and the one I stayed in when looking round for somewhere to live was nothing to write home about either. My aunt came down on a coach trip and stayed in one of the seafront hotels Lainey mentions in Sandown and both her and my parents have done coach trips and stayed at the Ocean View in Shanklin - because of the coach trips you'd think you were walking straight into a Lancashire mill town with all the accents there Laughing Bit old fashioned hotel, but they all enjoyed staying there, then again they were the same age as most of the rest of the guests Wink One time the parents also stayed in a nice holiday cottage at Apse Manor, only drawback was the rural location in winter.
I'm in Brading which suits me just fine, good location for work, nice dog walks up onto Brading Down or a quick trip in the car down to Sandown to walk the dogs at Yaverland.

This is the place Lainey was talking about on Bembridge Harbour - http://www.xoronfloatel.co.uk/about.htm - used to walk past it quite often with the dogs.
Also, the holiday cottage the parents rented was through this company - http://www.islandcottageholidays.com/

Thanks Carrie for finding that link to help "B". I knew there was a floating B n B at Bembridge somewhere but just couldn't find anything on it!

Hi Lainey and 'Hello Carrie'!!
Im so grateful to for your help and friendliness, thankyou Very Happy

Just so you know im only just starting my search, so will be coming down in two weeks to have a look at property prices in different areas. We'll be driving down on Friday 12th but as i cant get away from work until 4.30 i wont get to Portsmouth until approx 9pm, so we'll just stay in a Premier Lodge that night and get the ferry over Saturday morning to book into a decent hotel somewhere on the island. Ive decided to look on the web for one of the big hotels any where on the island like a Crowne Plazza or similar as they're all the same where ever you go. Sadly im in work Monday Sad so its only a short trip but at least its a start!
By the way, do i continue to use this 'entertainment' section of the site to carry on chatting about this or do i move onto the general info site? I notice there's an option to send private reply so am assuming it goes directly to you and doesnt appear on the site. (told you im useless with stuff like this!) Not sure what to do or if it even matters? ummm, what do you reckon?? Confused
How coincidental that you both came down to the island from the north!
Great minds think alike Laughing
Ahh well, better get on with the hotel search, i'll let you know how i go on.
Take care and many thanks once again B Very Happy Very Happy xx

Hello B

Think we are okay to stay on this thread.

You won't find a CrownPlaza on the Island but you will find a Travel Lodge in the centre of Newport (but not the seaview that you were looking for! Very Happy ).

I have got a pocket guide of B n B's on Isle of Wight that gives a few suggestions. If you like I can PM you with the details?

Regards

Elaine x

Well, just always remember that choosing a quality business hotel with good leisure facilities enables you to unwind at the end of a busy day, and socializing with colleagues helps to build team spirit. So check out the chill out options at your disposal. There are hotels down the Sandown facing the sea. www.sportevents.com
