Hi everyone

We often visit the Island and love it. We are thinking of moving over and I wondered what the job situation is like. I'm fine as I have my own business which I can move anywhere but hubbie would like to work.
Would love candid replies.
Many thanks

Susie

Hi Beancounter,

I moved over here a couple of months ago from London with my girlfriend. The situation with jobs is not great at the moment, especially with 600 people about to join the dole queue from the Vesta wind-turbine factory, the workers 'sit-in' you may have seen on the National News. My girlfriend recently got a job with the IOW council and I am currently out of work following some temporary work. As for your husband it depends of course what he's looking for. The biggest single employers are the council and the islands NHS, especially St Mary's Hospital in Newport. Also, there is always a demand for care workers on the island with or without experience. As a tourist destination there is a fair bit of seasonal work (Though a bit late in the season now) Retail of course and quite a few smallish engineering firms especially in Marine engineering. I would reccomend you subscribe to the 'Isle of Wight County Press' who also have an online edition for jobs. It comes out every Friday. See www.iwcp.co.uk

Good luck. If you do move here i'm sure you won't regret it. We certainly don't. Within just a few days of being here I felt the stress of London living just falling away! We now live in Ryde just a hundred yards from the seafront. A lovely sight first thing in the morning.
