Where to stay? (soon-to-be-retiring couple)

Hi All,

My wife and I (an active couple in their late 50's) are thinking of retiring soon - and we are contempalting the Isle of Wight as a possible venure; We want to be close to our family in the UK, but also wanted somewhere warm(ish!). We are currently in the Middle East, so I'm sure we will feel the change of weather when we return!

Any comments/suggestions would be most welcome - especially in regard to the weather, and most importantly suggesions for where on the island to live. We want to be quite close to the coast (for swimming/fishing, and possibly boating), but not in the middle of an area which is too 'busy' and touristy.

Hi Barry

A lot of areas are quite close to the coast but if you are wanting to move to a quieter area of the Island I would suggest that you look at West Wight. This in my opinion is the "quieter" (and nicer) side of the Island but I suppose I am a litte biased!

I would suggest places such as Freshwater, Totland, Colwell Bay. For more "country" but also getting easy access to the coast I would suggest Shalfleet, Wellow, Thorley, Brighstone, Calbourne and the surrounding areas.

The "touristy" busy areas tend to be areas such as Sandown, Ventnor, Ryde and Shanklin. Bembridge is quieter but again a bit "touristy".

Yarmouth, Cowes, Seaview are more the "yachty" places.

It all depends really on what you are looking for. There are so many lovely places to live on the Island that it is difficult to give just one place.

I must admit though that I wouldn't personally want to live at Ryde although having said that some of the areas on the perimeter are very nice.
