I have just tuned in to the "News" on this dumbded down radio station in the hope of getting some up to date news on what damage had been done during the night, if any trees were down, roads blocked etc. etc.
The first item up at 10.00am was the weather and how it had badly affected DORSET without one word about the Isle of Wight.
That lasted for 30 seconds then she was on to a story about a LAWYER IN IRAQ followed by a man who had died in BIRMINGHAM.
With the 'other radio station just playing mind numbing music (why did the phone in go?) there is no station left to hear ISLE OF WIGHT NEWS.
Sorry for shouting, but it makes me so angry that the so called local radio station is called after the island, when it would be more appropriate to call it something which rhymes with Wight! |

Must have changed during the day because I heard them talking about trees that had blown down (even though I couldn't for the life of me find the one that was supposed to have blown down on Forest Road! ) and the areas that had suffered flooding.
Maybe it takes them a few hours to get the "local" news through! |

More to the point there is no facility left to question those in authority about decisions they have taken, or are about to take.
When Alex Dyke did the phone in, there was an opportunity to do just that, even though on some days it was a waste of time.
All that there is now is the faint possibility of having a letter published in the County Press and that is unlikely if the views expressed are opposed by the editorial team (such as it is).
IOWRadio cannot last much longer as the FM signal will be switched off soon.
The lack of a decent interactive radio station is one of the biggest drawbacks to living here.
Laineys post goes some way to explaining it. Four or five years ago, residents would ring up IOWRadio and TELL them about fallen trees, floods etc. BTW, what did you want to find the tree for anyway? Have chain saw will travel?
Nowadays people are more like Tali. They have given up on IOWRadio, myself included, because it is just cheesey rubbish. |

I'll admit I listened to IOW Radio travelling to work a couple of times when I first moved here. Decided it was utter drivel and never listened to it again. Now I wouldn't even have the chance if I wanted to, try getting a decent radio reception in Brading |

I used to be a regular contributor to the old phone in and had a few guest appearances in the studio.
The old phone in was many things to many people.
Some saw it as a load of rubbish, some saw it as a good laugh and some as a forum for getting stuff off their chest.
To me it was all of those.
Sadly, listeners never really got to grips with it, very few having the courage to call in and when Alex hacked off the Council with his "Schools Rally", that was the writing on the wall and the new regime got rid of him about the time that Carrie moved here.
It is exactly the opposite situation on LBC, where people queue for 30 minutes or more just to have a few seconds on phone in shows. Do it myself occasionally!
From Sony Award winners to absolute drivel in 3 years. Bit like Portsmouth FC eh tali?
Well done IOW Radio. |

"Sadly, listeners never really got to grips with it, very few having the courage to call in"
I'm afraid that it is a trait of the English.
They sit on their hands until whatever should be galvanizing them into action actually happens and then moan "why didn't somebody do something".
Take the present furore over Ryde and Shanklin theatres and Ventnor Winter Gardens.
The Council take the view and quite rightly in my opinion, that if these venues are not used and able to pay their way, then they should be closed down to save EVERY council tax payer from subsidising the few that DO use those venues. |

I hear that IW Radio are first with the news that, due to their efforts, Nokia are going to bring their White Christmas competition prize to the Island.
What a sad reflection of how life is viewed by the majority of people.
Put important issues before them (as is done on here and other forums) and people could not care less.
Soldiers dying in Afghanistan, nearly 3 million unemployed, MPs helping themselves to money they are not entitled, businesses struggling to stay solvent and yet the average Joe/Josephine is more concerned with the winner of X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing or, 8 tons of snow being brought to Seaclose for a day. |

Talk about run with the horses and hunt with the hounds WTF do you want. You rave on about no Island news, Then you rant on about everybody sitting on their hands. Then to top it all of you rubbish the radio on their efforts to bring a bit of xmas magic to the island. The very same people who sat on their hands voted. Did you? I did not and I will not be going. (it ain't my bag) But good luck to the people that want it. It's free FFS. Also it's island news. |

Don't get all paranoid.
You obviously didn't take my advice then?
The use of the "F" word so often shows a distinct lack of vocabulary and a lack of tolerance that you showed so angrily on the Theo Serle thread.
What tipped you over the edge on this one? The X Factor slur? |

Why would I be doing that. It was my point of view. If you lot disagree with it that's up to you.

Stll flaming then. My point is, why shout, rant and rave over something not happening then shout rant and rave when it does. Still I suppose Taliwhatsisname will soon be putting a poll up so half a dozen regulars can show newbies that they can't go against the flow on this forum.
I also happen to agree with GD about the dross that is put forward as entertainment. But to live a life of doom and gloom about reccession, war and cheating MPs and never look up and see a bit of light on the horizon is not the way I want to live my life. Don't take this as a slur on the poor soldiers who will not be going to xmas events with their kids. I'm ex services myself, pehaps thats is why I do not suffer fools gladly. |

So are you one of the brain washed minority who actually believe all this garbage about global warming?
If so you should read the Yafford millers post on VB which, quoting a "denier" who says "We often get a drenching in November" she says something along the lines of: " that must be what they are saying in Cumbria as they look at the holes where the bridges used to be"
Trouble is Ace, Bendy Wendy is economical with the truth just like her heroes at IPCC and CLAP.
March 1947 - Floods from Windsor to York, London to Gloucester 100s dead.
May 1950 - Tornado devastates southern England.
August 1952 - Lynmouth Devon flood 34 dead.
Feb. 1953 - East Anglia tide levels 8.9 feet plus 307 dead.
June 1957 - Severe flooding in Cornwall 1000s homeless
Talk about an inconvenient truth. But then it just doesn't suit the agenda to mention these historical facts does it? Global warming my ****.
Anyway, welcome back. Keep posting! |

I am not really, I resent being taxed, overcharged and lied to when it comes to global warming/climate change. But I still need convincing either way (not with dogmatic ranting or one scientists point of view) To be in denial about it is stupid, as a gardener, I can see changes in seasons, like this Autumn. 50 years ago it was frost from mid Oct. we will not see any until January I bet. Freezing temperatures are good for the health, they kill loads of unwanted microbes in the soil and next seasons crops are better for it. They might make your snotterbox run a bit but it is clearing you out as well. Our climate is definately changing and even if it is down to nature we have the technology to hold it back a bit, so a few windmills on the horizon is no big deal.
Perhaps when you look up some more selective catastophies in the past. have a look at London smog and what caused it. Also look at what cured it, not a million miles away from what some people want now. |
