Rydes only town centre supermarket is a rip-off

I for one have finally had enough of the establishment in question, I have no need to name it as you will all be aware of it.

I have been a loyal customer for a good many years and although not altogether happy to do so I have been willing to pay a bit more for the convenience of shopping there.
But now it has got ridiculous, prices go up and up, and I am not talking small increases as its not unusual for items retailing at £1 to jump 25 pence at a time. Added to which items I have been buying week in week out for years keep being discontinued leaving me with buying second choice at greatly inflated prices. Then you find yourself presented with only three tills open and having to endure lengthy queues in order to have the privilege of paying through the nose.

Well that's it I am off to a store that appreciate my custom and gives me, the customer, a choice in what I buy.

Good riddance to them I say and I wont be back in a hurry...assuming that is they survive given their business acumen.

Of course, Summerfields were taken over by the Co-op last year, if that's relevant.

I don't really agree about the prices - they seem much in line with other supermarkets, but definately agree about lack of tills. I used to go in when they open at 7am to do a big shop, big mistake, the only till open is the kiosk where they sell cigarettes! Went in today and the shelves of fresh food (Veg, meat etc) are now empty. Not their fault though. Spoke to a member of staff and it's a combination of panic-buying by idiots who interpret the cold weather as being the end of the world, and a delivery stuck in Cowes!

Moving your loyalty from one chain store to another is only going to inconvenience you. Why not support local businesses before they're gone for good.
I haven't lived or shopped in Ryde for a while, but there was a local greengrocers, bakers and a butcher, use them if they still exist.

National chains destroy local businesses. The Council let them set up here because they create employment, but by doing so make it impossible for locals to set up and compete. The jobs created are lousy and low paid contributing to a wage threshold that stays at or is little more than the regulated minimum.

Here in Newport we're lucky, we've got a farmers market. I also use what's left of the businesses that my parents always used. Profits made by the chains don't benefit the Island. Cowes is a perfect example of this, most of the shops open only for the summer for the tourist season. Being closed for 6 months of the year means reduced business rates, and so more profit to take off the Island.
