Although it shouldn't be the case and especially nowadays as it costs next to nothing to notify unsuccessful applicants with either a simple automated text message or email, employers will not bother unless enough applicants hassle them to do so.
If 99 of the 100 applicants who applied for a single post were to phone, email or write to the employer to find out if they have been successful, employers would soon get the message. But unfortunately applicants don't and assume after a period of time if they haven't heard anything then they didn't get the job.
Like I said previously you ideally need to know the reason why rather than the plain old 'We will keep your details on file', otherwise you're going into your next interview blind making the same mistakes.
When it's your turn to ask questions at the end of the interview, just politely add 'So I can expect to hear from you in......' and add a suitable time scale depending on the job. Make sure you get his or her name and if you don't hear anything, PESTER THEM!
It's a wicked world out there. We've got the ludicrous situation where kids who have spent a fortune getting an education are flipping burgers in a burger bar to make ends meet because they are over qualified and the people doing the interviews are scared for their own jobs.
And then there's the other brick wall they also hit whereby the only work experience they have is burger flipping which puts doubts into the employers mind as to the suitability of the applicant, when it's not their fault they don't get given a chance. |
