Hi.
We are possibly looking to move to the island next year and are looking to buy somewhere near Newport. Is there any dodgy areas which we should avoid?

What do you call dodgy?

If you're on about crime, compared to most other places in the UK we have very little.
In fact the Island has so little going on that we only have enough news to report to sustain 1 newspaper a week. Unlike other Islands who have a daily paper.
Same thing on the local radio stations, a long broadcast about national happenings, and then a quick mention about Mr. Jones winning yet again in the prize marrow section of the local gardening show.

The Island is the ideal retirement home and welcomes all who have no need to work. Although it's also a fantastic place to raise a family, but only if you're loaded.

Hi

We moved here a year ago.

If you mean are there rough estates, I don't think they are rough in comparison to the mainland, but I think there is an estate at Hunny Hill in Newport.

Best move we made coming over here. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies.

I live in the Channel Isles and am used to living in quite a protected environment hence the fact that living on the mainland does not appeal to me one bit.

Your beautiful island reminds me of how our island used to be about 30 years ago. It is so unspoilt compared to here and although your youngsters may complain that there's nothing to do over there I can assure them that compared to here there is plenty!

I have lived here 6 years now and live in a rural area in West Wight - 8 miles from Newport and a ten minute drive from Yarmouth. It is a lovely area and totally unspoilt.

Good luck with your move and hope you find somewhere suitable to live.

It's far from unspoilt, and getting worse. We suffer with 2 kinds of erosion here, natural from the elements and Government rulings. The erosion caused naturally we can do nothing about and in another couple of hundred years everyone will be living in Newport.

The local authorities have eroded, and all but wiped out the natural independent charm we once boasted. Killing off local small businesses by encouraging national chains to set up here. We are now but an extension of the Mainland. We are soon to become like any other major city but with a bit more greenery and crap roads.

It really does sound like home from home to me. Only real difference is that I can afford to buy a house outright on your island. Here, I would be lucky to get a bedsit for £200,000.

In that case welcome. You're sold on the idea, you've got cash, you'll fit in well.
