well, aftrenoon guys and gals
me and my partner and our husky are moving to the iow for a 6 month trial, with a view to living there permanently.
a family friend has a holiday home there and we are letting it off of them for 6 months for very cheap. my thinking is itll be a good chance to move out of home and try and make a go of it!
my nan and grandad live in freshwater and have done for probably 20 odd years.
im a qualified electrician so am hoping to find some work on the island, although ill do whatever work i have to!
no major point to this thread guess, just to say hi

Hope your move goes well. I'm sure that you will love it when you get here.
If you're a qualified electrician I'm sure you will find plenty of work. You could always advertise in the local press and also in the local magazine The Beacon which is circulated free throughout the Island.
Good luck! |

Thanks for that
We holiday here every year and also visit my grand parents and love the place!
Couldn't believe it when we said to the family friend about love to live here and they said about the house!
Looking forward to some nice dog walks too! |

Sparkie
You've probably picked a good time to come over. There's quite a bit of building work happening here, so if you don't mind site work, I'm guessing you'll do alright. |

hi wight portal.
i have noticed a fair amount of work going on over there actually!
some of the locals i spoke to said something about a big project coming up in newport area?
i think ill go around and speak to the local sparkies, see if they need any labour, try the sites out and if i i have to ill stack shelves
im not qualified in anything to do with computers but my work covers quite a broad scope of work, from data points and patch panels (terminating only) right through to wiring for full automation (crestron and lutron for those who know) systems and i also know my way around a computer so fingers crossed i can find something on the island!
the mrs will be after something clerical so i guess shell register with an agency or something once we get there. |

If you've got a bit of spare dosh chuck a few ads in the local rags, you'll probably pick up a bit.
Now that it's illegal to do DIY household electrics unless you have all the bits of paper, there's no reason why you can't start up on your own.
A lot of people don't start up on their own because they think the market is saturated, considering how many ads are in the paper. But if you give good service and don't try to get rich straight off the bat you'll do well.
If the work is slow coming in subby yourself out to others.
You know the score, everyone wants a good cheap service, if you can provide that you're sorted. |

| Good luck with finding work and hope your move goes well. As for dog walking, there's so many lovely walks. My two dogs love it here, they get taken all over the place for walks or they love going to the beach (not every day or I find the sand and salt makes their feet very itchy). |

Thanks.
Can't wait to get out for some nice walks with the husky.
Really need to try an get some Internet on the go! But it depends if the house already has a line to it.
Anyway I'm realistic about work, probably Wont get a job as an electrician but I'm going to apply to everyone, never any harm in asking is there? |

| Hope your husky coped okay with the fireworks, at least there's not as many here as in many places. This is the first year my Lurcher has slept through them rather than trembling for evening after evening. |

our husky was with us on the beach in sandown, shes got a thing about digging so she was digging for gold all night!
i cant believe theres less firerworks (annoying chav ones) than round our old house, we had been hearing them a month before being fired at people etc.
and i thought sandown was superb! |

Well,
unfortunately we are going to be moving back to hertfordshire once our let expires (2 months)
shame as i absoloutely love it here, but i cant find work and the Mrs while working is barely covering the rent. I've applied to everyone for everything and theres nothing about.
But having spoken with my old boss hes told me theres a job for me, so the offer of employment is to much to say no to. Got the fun of trying to find a property etc now up there, which we would of had to do down here anyway i guess.
really sad about it, but what can i do! |

You did mention I believe in one of your posts about commuting.
Is this not an option?
Lack of work is always a killer here on the Island, that's why a lot of people leave.
I take it you haven't the funds to set up on your own.
Go make your fortune on the Mainland and then do as others do, retire here. |

thanks Wight Portal
the problem is a commute for me with a van etc would cost us a lot of money. Or i would have to park it in portsmouth and foot passenger across.
Unfortunately i dont have the money to afford to go on my own, and at my last check theres almost 50 electricians on the island of varying degrees, so theres an awful lot of competition.
I also cant help but feel that the work goes to friends of friends an awful lot. Maybe im wrong but just th efeeling i get.
terrible shame as i love the island but as you say, ill be back one day! |
