Hi Guys,
We are a couple, no kids, currently back in the UK living near Brighton, although we have spent the last decade living and working overseas, mainly in Australia. Very reluctantly we have had to relinquish our easy going lifestyle in Australia and return to reside in the UK due to family issues (ageing parents). Having been back about 10 months, we are struggling to adapt to the pace of life back here, the amount of traffic and are looking for somewhere new to relocate to, where living is not so frantic, pressurised and lived at 50,000 miles an hour !!
I can work from anywhere with a fast Broadband connection (which I presume is anywhere on the IOW?) and my wife is a massage therapist who can work from home, so we are looking to relocate to a generally more rural area, small village etc etc, where we can integrate within a local community. Although we lived in Sydney city for 6 years, we did spend 2 years travelling through and living in the extremely remote Australian bush, so we are very used to not having life's conveniences on our doorstep and those perceived problems of rural life are not an issue with us. We just need a small piece of land to grow our own food, a peaceful life and a local community for social activites and we are more than happy!
With this in mind, can anybody please kindly point us in the right direction as to where / if this would be achieveable on the island, as we are planning to visit before Winter sets in, for a 2 week cycle trip to have a look around at various areas and we have no idea where to head to!! From my last visits there, many many years ago, I seem to recall that the west was more tranquil, but I may be totally wrong!!!
Thank you, your help and advice is very much appreciated.
Best wishes, Steve & Lou |

You don't mention if you're looking to buy or rent.
Either is expensive, but land for sale comes up more than land to rent.
As mentioned land is expensive, this is because the majority of plots are sold for development because that's where the big bucks are made, even on small plots 2 or more houses are crammed in.
Pasture land comes up often. This is of course is cheaper because of the restrictions on it's use. I don't know the ruling on this, but it maybe possible to buy a plot and rent or buy a house nearby and use the land to grow your crops. If you go and have a dig around the local Council's site at: http://iwight.com you can get in touch with a planning officer and find out what pasture land can be used for other than grazing.
Broadband isn't a problem anywhere where you can have a land line installed. |
