Posted: 13-10-2010, 20:01 Post subject: Another Isle of Wight Mover..! |
|
|
Firstly Apologies for another I'm moving to the Isle of Wight thread.
However, I have read the other threads and they are mainly families moving over looking for advice on schools etc.
I'm a single 30 year old guy who is moving over at the end of November due to work relocating me.
So, any advice on where I should live? looking for somewhere a bit lively and with some stuff going on, I was thinking of Cowes or Ryde?
I will be working in East Cowes, but do have a car so guess anywhere on the Island is accesible for that..!
Oh and if any one has a tip for a good gym, that would be much appreciated.
Many thanks |

The Island doesn't do lively
Seriously, Ryde or Newport would probably be your best bet, both have those so called super pubs that have closed down the smaller boozers. They both have a half decent bus service to East Cowes, so if you're ever unfit to drive, you still can get to work. |

| Hope your househunting went well. If it was a choice between Cowes and Ryde then personally I'd go for Cowes. That's where we always go for nights out from work. |

Cowes probably best, nice little town especially in summer plus you can escape to Southampton easy from there
If your into watersport etc you'll not get too bored - depends what your used to - nowhere is really lively over here, alot of old folk retire to island
Your lucky you have a job to come to, thats biggest hurdle over here.
Good luck |

Thanks everyone.
I am a sailor so looking forward to getting involved in one of the clubs in Cowes.
I must say when this relocation idea was first suggested I was slightly reluctant at the thought, but having been over a few times now I'm actually getting quite excited at the prospect.
Three weeks and a lot of packing to go.!!

Pleased you're enjoying life here sparkie1984.
How's the job hunting going. Would imagine it's proving difficult now that the "seasonal" work has finished.
Have to say that job availability is difficult on the Island and it will only get worse once the Government cuts come into their own.
Also there will be more job losses with the school mergers and with the Council redundancies.
Mind you though there always seem to be loads of vacancies in the caring and catering professions. |

Thanks mate
Well I'm a qualified electrician so I have written to all
Companies on the island, our let is flexible as it's a family friend and it's a 6 month to start with.
Worst case I'll have to go back to the mainland to my old
Job. My boss told me he'd have me back in a second.
But I'm praying i can get in with a company here as I don't wanna go back!
So sorry for the thread hijack outdoorcjc |

Good to hear the experience of another mover. Hope the job search has been succesful.
Have just booked my single ferry crossing, felt slightly strange/exciting not booking a return journey.!

Do hope you manage to get some temporary work Sparkie while you're waiting for your certificate.
I am led to believe (but not 100% sure its correct) that some places (like Argos) aren't taking on temporary Christmas staff this year - they are just increasing the permanent staff's hours after having cut them during the year! |

thanks mate. theres a few places employing for xmas so ill give them an application.
i have savings, and the option of returning for some weekend work or work with my old company if i got really desperate. so could worst case work for them and come back at weekend until i get sorted.
annoying as theres currently a sparky job going but they want latest regs which i cant do until i get my certs
i did wonder why not so many places were asking for help this year though. |
