| I want to move to the Isle of Wight with a friend. I live in Wales so I think I can just buy a house and live there right? But my friend lives in America. So can she live there too? I'm 16 and she's 24, we've got a bit of money between us but not much in qualifications. |

There's loads of posts on the subject of moving here. Read them all then if you still have questions ask again.
But I will say that a lot of youngsters your age move off the Island because of the lack of employment, rather than come here. We're more a retirement place than anything else. |

Ok sorry, I'll take a look. I live in Wales, it can't get much worse than here lol.
EDIT: Sorry, that sounded really bad.. What I meant was it can't get any more rural than here. I live in Llanrhystud, near Aberystwyth, so there's pretty much nothing to do if you don't drive (and I don't). It's a mile walk down a dangerous road to the nearest bus... I don't know why I'm saying this but oh well.

I just looked through every topic about moving in Living On / Moving to the IoW and found nothing very helpful. Except a bit more about the geography. Most of the people moving here are older ones or families, as you said, which isn't much help for a 16 yo.
I was very tired when I posted last night and I think I got confused with some other island... But IoW is the one I want. Just a few inquires for now, nothing major. |

OK, yeah I agree, most of the stuff on here is for the mature person.
So what is it you're after?
How do you intend to live?
What skills do you have for getting work?
Are you working at the moment or just left school?
As you're not old enough to drive it may pay to find a job first then find a place to live near it, as public transport isn't cheap.
Rents are £495 a month and upwards. Most landlords shy away from people on benefits.
These are facts and not an old git trying to burst your bubble. But if you have read all my posts under this subject, you'll know I try not to rose tint anything.
Basically to move here you need some money to tie you over while you get settled. |

Thank a lot :D
I don't mind how I live, even a caravan in a field would be cool. Like I said, I live in Wales so I'm used to no buses and being in the middle of nowhere. Now I'm not sure if they were supposed to be rhetorical but I got some spare time so I'll answer anyway..
I can repair computers (and laptops. And I'll have a go at anything else like that, I love pulling electronics apart) and I'm willing to do menial labour, waitering etc. just not cleaning. I'd also do charity work if needed, although it won't help me with money. Oh just thought, I am a drummer too, but not very good. Well, some people think I'm good but I don't. So maybe I could start a band? Or join one. I left school last year and I did an online course and now looking for work.
I'm going to have a look here for jobs, I think I saw a jobs section somewhere. But it might have been another site. Whatever, I'll have a look anyway.
Just looked at isleofwightjobs.com and found 3 jobs I could do... Just gotta convince my friend to come too now, find somewhere to live, get some money together, move out of here and into there, get some transport sorted and I'll be done. So easy ha ha...
Just updating this as I go, in case anyone cares. And I'm bored. Found a nice looking flat, and I could probably borrow some cash to get me started from parents. How much do you think I'll need? The flat I saw was £530 PCM so I was thinking about two-three months rent, plus £150 for food (that'd do me about three months). This will be the first time I've lived alone so I'm not really sure how much I'll need to get started. My family of three lives on about £8000 a year, so I know how to live on barely anything.
Also, I'm visiting in two Wednesdays time with family. So I'll hopefully be able to have a look around Newport and maybe Cowes. Or maybe they'll be too interested in doing touristy things. I'll see if I can just get on a bus and do some siteseeing for the day. Whatever. I'll prob let you know what I think, if anyone cares enough. |

A sixteen year old with a brain and some ambition Hallelujah!
Get yourself a basic CSCS, Construction Skills Certification Scheme, card, costs about £25. You take a test on basic building site safety, which is just common sense stuff and not rocket science.
Buy yourself hard hat and boots and hit the sites as a labourer.
There's quite a bit of labouring work going and there will be more needed in the not so near future.
You'll earn minimum wage plus, but it's one of the only jobs where hours are consistent and comes with overtime. |

| Sorry, I'm on holiday so not much time to be bored. I looked at the CSCS cards and I can get a pretty good one... when I finally get my certificate from the school. The one I should have got over a year ago. Yeah... And I don't think we really know where we're going for the visit on Wed, so I'm gonna find an appropriate section and ask for ideas |

| Thanks :) I'll keep you updated. I don't care if you don't care, I'll tell you anyway. I don't mind if you don't answer, I'm sure you've got better things to do. Thank you so much for all your help |

If I wasn't interested I wouldn't of answered your posts.
Although you have brains and ambition as we found out earlier, you seem to have a lack of confidence in people.
I suggested the construction industry because it's the easiest industry to get into from the bottom up and is what I did at your age, although in my day you didn't need a certificate just to blow your nose like you do now.
Whether what I post pans out for you is entirely down to you. A forum is about imparting wisdom, that's what I try to do. Just remember me when you're rich |

I've spent most of my life round some complete bastards, and been betrayed by someone I loved. It's hard to trust people I don't even know after that... What you said makes sense, you wouldn't be this interested if you weren't interested, but I find it hard to believe that you're not doing it for some other selfish reason. But that's a whole other subject.
And when I'm rich I'm moving to America, you could come too if you wanted... maybe... :) |

You're posting on a public forum anonymously, you don't need to trust anyone or what they post, you just take what you need and form your own conclusions.
In the real world it's obviously different, but you can't let bad experiences rule your life, otherwise you end up tarring everyone with the same brush and will end up being a loner, which goes against the evolution of man as a social animal. |

I just mean I can't believe you're really interested in me, rather than doing this for your own benefit. You've been so helpful and it's not what I'm used to, online or in real.
Also, just came back from holiday and IoW. We went to Cowes, then Newport, Alum Bay, Ventnor, Newport, Cowes, home. I love it there. A lot of countryside like I'm used to, but also big (well, big for me) towns with shops and stuff. And everything seems local cos the island is so small. Is there any parts that are drastically different? |
