Hello NorthernMonkey from a "Northern Lass"!!!

As I have mentioned in various threads/posts on this site I moved here in 2004. For the first 18 months I commuted to the mainland for my work and so the only friends I had were those I worked with and due to the water it was extremely hard meeting up with them at weekends or evenings. Although I did make friends with a couple of people who I am now extremely close friends with even though they are still on the mainland.

However, I was made redundant in 2006 and managed to get a part-time job on the island and that's really when I felt I started to enjoy living here. As I then started to feel I was part of the island.

When I moved from the North to be with my partner I had been leading a very hectic social life so coming here to absolutely nothing (no family/ friends/social life) was quite stressful. Also, to make matters worse my partner has always worked away from home for long periods so I didn't even have his company for socialising. My partner has lived here now for over 20 years and has made some good friends with whom I am also now friends with.

My passion when living up North was for dancing (out to various venues most nights) and I so missed it. I tried ballroom dancing classes here but this didn't work out as it was couple driven rather than for singletons.

Then, about 4 years ago my passion Modern Jive came to the island! Yeh! This is held on a Monday evening at the Riverside Centre. From this I met up with lots of people and made more friends (one of whom as now unfortunately moved to the mainland!).

Then in Southampton near to the ferry terminal another jive club opened (MoJive) which is held on Tuesdays and I also started going there where I met more people and have been on dance weekends and events.

I know dancing doesn't appeal to many young people but you would be surprised at how many young girls do go dancing - especially at MoJive in Southampton (maybe not so many on the island) but it is a great way of meeting people and getting a social life.

Good luck and I do hope that you soon manage to meet and make new friends and get your social life on track.

Lainey x x

Have you tried Twitter? There are a number of people on Twitter from the Isle Of Wight. It's a good way to start to get to know people and then meet up. There is an Isle of Wight Twitter group that meet up regularly. However, by joining Twitter you can ease your way into friendships by following other Islanders and getting into conversations on-line so that when you go to a meet up you know people already.
Generally though people on the Island are friendly and warm and if you go pretty much anywhere someone will strike up a conversation with you. I know this is not as easy as it sounds for most people! Have you thought about joining a group or club for an interest or doing an evening class? This also is a good way to put yourself into a situation where you meet new people who should have the same interests as you.
